Redcar Lib Dems welcome extra money to fix potholes

by Group Office on 14 October, 2014

Liberal Democrats on Redcar & Cleveland Council are pleased to see that a substantial grant from the Government to fix potholes is now being used.

Earlier this year the Government announced an extra £301,123 for Redcar and Cleveland Council to fix holes in the roads.

Lib Dem Council Group Leader Glyn Nightingale recently demanded to know how and when it was to be used. Local Liberal Democrats have reported over 100 potholes to the Council recently.

The Labour Cabinet Member responsible, Cllr Helen McLuckie, said that the money started being used in September in Loftus, Eston and Redcar. She said it was generous of the Government but that it was not enough.

Lib Dem Deputy Leader and Parliamentary Candidate, Councillor Josh Mason, said:

“The state of our roads is one of the issues that matters most to local people.

“The Government is right to identify this as a priority and to give extra cash.

“The Labour Council says the money is not enough, but they should remember that it is EXTRA money, it does not replace the money they should already be using to fix the roads.

“The Government estimates that each pothole costs £53 to fix on average. This means that more than an extra 5,000 holes can be repaired in the borough.

“The Labour Council puts up Council Tax every year yet fails to get the basics right. Now, thanks to the Coalition Government, they have no excuse for failing to fix our roads.”
