A tribute to Joyce Benbow

by Group Office on 5 November, 2014

Liberal Democrats on Redcar & Cleveland Council have paid tribute to former Councillor Joyce Benbow who died on Saturday 1 November aged 84.

Joyce served as councillor for the West Dyke ward following her victory at a by-election in 1996, and was a Cabinet Member between 2003 and 2007. She stood down from the Council in 2011.

She also stood for Parliament for the Liberal Democrats in Redcar in 1997.

Lib Dem Group Leader, Councillor Glyn Nightingale, said:

“It is very sad news.

“Joyce was a dedicated Liberal Democrat and dedicated to the local community.

“All the good work she did was welcomed by residents that she spoke to regularly and supported.

“Joyce was also a wheelchair user, and was never afraid to challenge the Council when it failed to address the needs of disabled people.

“She also did excellent work as a Cabinet Member in making our area safer.

“She was a fabulous person.”
