The Lib Dem Group on Redcar & Cleveland Council today supported a motion offering council support to workers and communities affected by the steelworks crisis in Redcar.
The motion was passed unanimously by council with cross-party support.
Lib Dem Group Leader, Cllr Josh Mason, said:
“Recent weeks have seen a brutal blow to our proud industrial heritage. Thousands of workers and families will be affected. We must work together to try to save jobs and battle for a stronger Tees Valley.”
The motion also calls on central government to do everything in its power to keep steelmaking alive in the area.
Lib Dem Cllr Glyn Nightingale added:
“Part of the problem is Chinese firms “dumping” steel in European markets. The Government needs to do all it can to ensure a level playing field so that our steel industry can thrive.”
