Figures uncovered by the Liberal Democrats show that local taxpayers will face a bill of £78,000 for the Labour Council’s failed attempt to reduce residential care fees in Redcar & Cleveland.
The Council tried to demand that residential care providers reduce their fees.
However, last month the providers took the issue to the High Court and won. The Council will now have to pay 80% of the claimants’ costs, in addition to its own legal fees. This means a bill for local taxpayers of around £78,000.
Councillor Glyn Nightingale, Lib Dem Group Leader, said:
“Residential care providers were never going to agree to lower charges in the middle of a contract.
“This is another in a series of disasters where Labour routinely wastes residents’ council tax.”
“Not content with spending £1.5 million on a Vertical Pier that nobody wants, £37,600 on bird monitoring, and £125,000 doing up the Town Hall just before it was demolished, now Labour bosses are forcing local council taxpayers to stump up £78,000 for their poor judgement.”
