Lib Dem councillors today backed a motion aimed at phasing out single-use plastics at Redcar and Cleveland Council.
The council today agreed to ensure that single-use plastic items such as plastic cups are not used by the council after existing stocks run out.
The motion was submitted by Independent Councillor Stuart Smith. It was amended by Lib Dems Josh Mason and Margaret Wilson to include a request for regular updates on how the new arrangement is progressing.
Redcar Councillor Josh Mason said:
“Each year the average UK household uses 480 plastic bottles, but only recycles 270 of them – meaning nearly half (44%) are not recycled.
“If a year’s worth of the UK’s un-recycled plastic bottles were placed end to end, they’d reach around the world 31 times, covering just over 780,000 miles.”
“We need to ensure that more recycling is done.
“But better than recycling is to use less in the first place, and it is right that the council should lead by example.”
