Lib Dems Keep Up “Pier Pressure”

by Group Office on 19 May, 2011

Keeping up the pressure following Labour’s massive local election defeat in Redcar town, the Council’s Lib Dem Group have put forward a formal motion for the Council to stop the “vertical pier” development.

Following the local elections Labour now have only four councillors in the town compared with 11 for the Liberal Democrats.

West Dyke ward Councillor Mike Carling has submitted a motion to Redcar & Cleveland Council calling for the vertical pier to be scrapped.

Cllr Carling said:

“It’s clear from the voting in the May elections in Redcar that the people of the town reject Labour’s ill-conceived and costly scheme. Local people are convinced will be a drain on the Council’s resources. What is needed is a proper pier.”

Lib Dem council group leader Glyn Nightingale added:

“Labour has lost its mandate for the scheme. It must abandon it and get down to working with local people for a new strategy with an appropriate theme for a seaside town in order to regenerate Redcar. There is no doubt the overwhelming majority of local people in Redcar want a real pier.”
