Liberal Democrat Councillor Eric Howden is stepping up his campaign to get the signs on the main roads telling motorists they have arrived in Redcar improved.
In a question at last Thursday’s meeting of the Redcar and Cleveland Council Cllr Howden asked for the signage to be improved and updated.
Labour’s Council bosses said they were looking into all aspects of tourism in the borough, and said they would take the matter into consideration.
Cllr Howden said:
“This really isn’t good enough. We need a firm commitment from the Council.”
“If the Council is serious about increasing Redcar’s popularity as a tourist resort it needs to advertise the town better.
“Redcar is a unique town with a superb beach, the oldest lifeboat in the world, the oldest links golf course in Yorkshire, one of the oldest cricket clubs in Yorkshire and many other interesting historical features. Unlike many towns, we have lots of small independent shops. We should blow our own trumpet a lot more.
“What we need is more of a “gateway” into the town, with colourful, exciting, big signs. The sign on the trunk road entrance to town is so small it is hidden by other signage.”
