Labour councillors today ignored the people of Redcar and voted to press ahead with the “vertical pier” project.
The Liberal Democrats tabled a motion to abandon the plans for the scheme and fight for a traditional pier.
However, Labour members voted through an amendment which removed the commitment to ditching the scheme.
All the Liberal Democrats present voted to retain the part about stopping the vertical pier.
Cllr Mary Ovens, Lib Dem Group Deputy Leader, said:
“Labour has shown contempt for public opinion.”
“It is clear to me that the people of Redcar don’t want this.”
“Labour should accept that they got this wrong and reconsider.”
“We are very much in favour of the rest of the plans to regenerate Redcar but the so-called vertical pier is not the way forward.”
“We will continue to campaign for a real pier for Redcar.”

I reckon this headline is a little misleading, since the amended substantive motion and amendments weren’t about the vertical pier.
What I remember is that the Lib Dems, showing their commitment, voted against asking their MP to seek funding for a traditional pier. Surely that’d be a commonsense step towards achieving that goal?
